The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers many ways for you to pursue a career in nursing. Our most popular route is through our Integrated Health Studies major with a concentration in Behavioral Health. The Integrated Health Studies major allows pre-nursing students to complete prerequisite courses for nursing school along with completing an engaging  bachelor's degree that connects biological sciences, psychology, anatomy and physiology, sociology, chemistry, and more to explore human health from the level of the gene to society.

  • Engage in Research

Connect with UIC Nursing and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty to conduct undergraduate research to hone your skills in critical thinking, analyzing data, and communicating new knowledge to improve health. UIC students have investigated risk factors for asthma in children; monitored how women with diabetes make healthier decisions with food and activity in their everyday life; evaluated smoking cessation interventions in communities with high rates of tobacco use. As a top research university, there are unlimited opportunities at UIC for students to partner with our faculty.

  • Gain Hands-On Experience

Gain real-world experience in the healthcare field volunteering and shadowing health professionals at UI Health, our hospital and health clinics located in the Illinois Medical District, the nation’s largest health and innovation district. Our pre-nursing students earn certification in fields such as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to gain knowledge and experience in the healthcare field to prepare for nursing school.
  • Strengthen Your Candidacy

We offer in-person and virtual advising options, interview and professional school application preparation, career and internship advising, and more.

IHS Nursing Pathways

I was honored to participate in a summer research opportunity. I participated in the UI Health Department of Pediatrics Summer Scholars Program. In this program, I was able to learn about forms of research and study the use of individualized pain plans.
